Commissioner George Arthur French, North West Mounted Police

French who had been a Royal Artillery Officer organized the Force when it was first established in 1873. He was a hard driving leader which infuriated both his subordinates and politicians. He resigned from the NWMP in 1876 after the Force was firmly established.
